Yeager to face mass litigation panel in connection with slope failure

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Yeager Airport officials, Charleston residents and other parties impacted by the 2015 hillside collapse are scheduled to meet in front a three-judge panel next year.

A mass litigation panel will hear from several different defendants who sued the airport after part of Yeager’s safety overrun area slipped on to Keystone Drive in Charleston, destroying a church and displacing residents.

The airport sued a number of defendants, including Triad Engineering, in connection with the construction of the airport’s EMAS system.

Sayre said they wanted to bring everyone together because it’s a complex issue.

“It was in front of several Kanawha County Circuit judges and this way the case got condolidated,” he said.

A mediation hearing is scheduled for Feb. 1.

The investigation into the slip continues more than two years later, Sayre said.

“We’re still waiting on the final forensic reports dealing with the collapse from our defense experts and there’s also depositions that are ongoing.”

The hillside collapsed on March 12, 2015.
