Yeager road repairs to begin Wednesday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Crews with the state Division of Highways will begin repairing the road to Charleston’s Yeager Airport on Wednesday morning.

“They’ll bring the machines in and mill the current road down an inch or two and then come back and overlay it with black top,” explained Yeager Airport Director Terry Sayre.

The construction is part of Jim’s Promise, the governor’s initiative to improve state roads. Governor Jim Justice announced funding for the project earlier this month.

Sayre said the paving is desperately needed because the road has been falling apart for more than a decade. He said the new road will create a better image for West Virginia’s largest airport.

“We’re really glad to get that project done,” Sayre said.” It’ll be great for our customers and the people that work and visit the airport. It’ll help with the first impression of West Virginia. The first thing people see see when they get off the airplane and drive out of here is that road.”

The work is expected to be complete by the end of the week.

The paving will cause a bit of an inconvenience for those traveling to and from the airport, so Sayre recommends recommends planning ahead.

“Everybody just needs to remember to get here earlier than they normally would for their flight so that they’re not delayed and they don’t miss any flights or miss picking up people in time,” he said.

The airport is also conducting emergency slide repairs as part of the governor’s initiative.
