Yeager Airport receives $200,000 for hillslide expenses

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha County Commission approved Thursday providing Yeager Airport with $200,000 for costs related to the March 2015 collapse of its safety-overrun area.

The area collapsed, destroying part of Keystone Drive and a church, as well as damaging several homes.

Airport director Terry Sayre said some of the funds would also be used in monitoring the area, which includes surveying and engineering fees.

“We just want to make sure it is stable and safe for the neighborhood, and I think it’s in good shape,” Sayre said. “It’s overgrown with grass and weeds. It’s looks pretty good.”

Sayre said he is glad the project is complete, as the airport has other items that need to be addressed.

“We have the state up there now working on Airport Road for the one lane that collapsed,” he said. “They should be through within the next week and a half.”
