WV PSC schedules status hearing in connection with WVAWC investigation for 2014 chemical spill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Public Service Commission has a status conference set for Monday so they can pick a date to hold a hearing on their investigation involving West Virginia American Water’s role in the 2014 Freedom Industries chemical spill and water emergency.

The status conference will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the PSC headquarters in Charleston.

There’s a proposed settlement in the WVAWC request for a surcharge on its customers to pay for water line projects. The hearing was scheduled to begin Wednesday before the PSC, but chairman Mike Albert announced the parties involved had reached a settlement.

The PSC still has to sign off on it. Details of the proposal will be released in a hearing scheduled for Thursday morning.

West Virginia American and Eastman Chemical, the maker of the chemical MCHM, agreed to pay up to $151 million combined to compensate nearly 300,000 people impacted by the water contamination. Settlements were reached this week.
