Woman overdoses on heroin at Charleston City Councilman Slater’s home, police say

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police say a 23-year-old woman overdosed on heroin at Charleston Councilman Bernard Slater’s home on Thursday.

Kayla Slater was able to be revived by emergency responders, according to Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper.

No one was charged with any crime. Slater was elected earlier this year as Charleston’s Ward 1 Councilman.

Slater had previously been investigated by police in September for allegedly offering to lie for his cousin, Steven Coleman.

Coleman was indicted last week on a murder charge, allegedly giving Melody Ann Oxley drugs that killed her in February.
