Woman killed at East End intersection

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The woman struck and killed by a truck late Thursday night in Charleston was passed out in the crosswalk, police said.

Katie Stewart, 34, of Charleston, was dressed in all black when she was run over at 11:30 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper.

“Sadly she was dragged some way,” Cooper said.

The driver of the truck saw something in the street near the intersection of Leon Sullivan Way and Lee Street East but wasn’t able to maneuver around it. The driver immediately called 911. She will not be charged, police said.

“It was dark and she (Stewart) had on dark clothing. There will be no charges filed there,” Cooper said.
