Madeline Gourevitch, 31, faces five counts of animal cruelty. Police said a dead cat was found in her Wyoming Street apartment. The other dead cats were found in bags in her refrigerator and freezer.

Police and members of the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association were called to the scene on March 10. The landlord said there was a smell coming from the fridge. He noticed a paw sticking out of a trash bag inside the fridge, according to the criminal complaint.

It appears the cats died of starvation, according to KCHA.

When police arrived at the home, they said there was a dead cat near the front entrance and cast feces all over the apartment.

The landlord told police Gourevitch hadn’t been staying the apartment for some time.
