West Side teen hospitalized after accidental shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A teenager is hospitalized and his cousin facing charges after a weekend accidental shooting, Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper said.

One of the boys brought a concealed handgun to a West Side residence Saturday afternoon, Cooper said.

“They got the gun out, looking at it, and one of the kids pulled the trigger and shot his cousin in the neck area,” Cooper said.

The boy is currently partially paralyzed. He suffered injuries to this throat and spine, Cooper said.

“We hope he improves. His injuries aren’t’ believed to be life-threatening,” according to Cooper.

Charges are pending in juvenile court against the boy who brought the gun to the residence.

“It’s a tough situation,” Cooper said.

Both boys are in their mid-teens.
