Weekend events to kick off in Capital City

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Special event season in Charleston will return “in a big way” this weekend, according to Charleston Deputy Mayor Rod Blackstone.

Downtown Streetfest, hosted by the Charleston Area Alliance, will take place Saturday along Capitol Street, between Quarrier and Lee, from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The block party-type event will be free to the public.

“It’s the first of four that we’re going to be doing on Saturdays during the course of the summer, in July, August and September and June of course we’ll have the FestivALL street art fair as well,” Blackstone said on Friday’s “580 Live” hosted by Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

Blackstone said several activities will be going on including food and drinks.

“There’s an open container waiver so you can be able to have a beer in the street or a glass of wine. There’s stuff for kids, there’s live music and a lot of fun to be had,” he said.

Musical artist William Matheny will headline the event. Many downtown retailers and restaurants will have special offerings as well.

Downtown Streetfest events are also scheduled for July 23, Aug. 20 and Sept. 17.

The Charleston Light Opera Guild will present its final weekend of “Spamalot” at the Charleston Civic Center. Show time is 7:30 p.m. for both Friday and Saturday at the Little Theater.

On Friday night, several prospects for major league baseball will be pitching at Appalachian Power Park. Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Mitch Keller, who plays for the West Virginia Power, and Texas Rangers top draft pick Dillon Tate will pitch.

“It should be a great match up,” Blackstone said. “It might be the best pitching match up in minor league baseball going on tonight or even in professional baseball.”

The game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. against North Carolina’s Hickory Crawdads.
