WAYNE, W.Va. — The embattled assessor in Wayne County resigned Friday.
Eric Hodges, charged with bankruptcy earlier this year, submitted a letter to the Wayne County Commission.
“Be advised, this is the formal notification that I, Eric Lantz Hodges, will be resigning from the office of the Assessor for Wayne County. This resignation shall be effective immediately upon the tendering of this notice. I have considered it a privilege and honor to serve the citizens of Wayne County in my tenure as Assessor. I greatly appreciate the voters and citizens of Wayne County for their support.”
Hodges allegedly used a state-issued card to make more than $50,000 in purchases for things like a recreational vehicle, tools and guns. He’s charged with embezzlement, computer fraud and fraudulent use of a credit card.
The county commission attempted to have Hodges removed from office by a three-judge panel appointed by the state Supreme Court. The panel met briefly Friday. Hodges resigned soon after. Criminal charges against him are expected to be presented to the November meeting of the Wayne County grand jury.
The Wayne County Commission will choose his replacement.
