Walmart zoning hearing pushed back until June

TEAYS VALLEY, W.Va. — A hearing scheduled for next Thursday regarding a special use permit that would allow a Walmart to be built on Route 34 in Teays Valley has been moved to June 18.

The notice section of the zoning ordinance requires an advertisement to be published in a newspaper at least 30 days prior to the hearing. The notice for the planned hearing was not published in enough time.

The Putnam County Board of Zoning Appeals will make a ruling at that time as to whether the special permit will be allowed. The Walmart has been hotly contested by Teays Valley residents who fear increased traffic in an already congested area. Walmart claims the proposed 43,000 square foot “neighborhood market” would not be different than the average grocery store.
