TV show “Cops” filming in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper says the TV series “Cops” is filming in the city this week.

“If you see the police officers out on a call and there’s a camera crew chasing them around, that’s what’s going on,” Cooper said on Tuesday’s “580 Live” heard on 580-WCHS.

Cooper said he met with the TV crew and showed them around the city.

“They came in town and did some ride-alongs about a month ago. I met their executive producer. They’re very professional and have been doing this for 31 years,” he said.

The show features shocking and outrageous footage of police officers as they execute their day-to-day duties on location.

Crime has been done in recent weeks, Cooper said, due to the suspension of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department’s needle exchange program. Cooper predicts TV crews will still have a lot to film, though.

“If they had been here before the needle exchange program at the health department shutdown, there would’ve been more criminals here, but there will be plenty of action. Summer is always busy,” he said.

The show itself is very entertaining, Cooper said.

“You’ll see some neat stuff here. They always get some good B-roll footage of the cities that they’re in, some of the more favorable videos from the Interstate and mountain tops,” he said.

Filming in Charleston lasts through July.
