GANDEEVILLE, W.Va. — A Roane County man is jailed and two law enforcement members are recovering after a domestic situation resulted in shots fired and a standoff Wednesday night.
Trooper expected to fully recover after Roane shooting
State Police and a Roane County sheriff’s deputy responded to the domestic disturbance at a home in the Gandeeville community Wednesday evening. When they arrived they learned from family members Gordon Hoskins Jr, 52, had been threatening to kill himself and was inside the home where two shots had been heard earlier.
“They believed the individual had possibly committed suicide,” said State Police Spokesman Captain Reggie Patterson. “The two officers responded to the residence and upon approaching the front door they received gunfire.”
The shotgun blast wounded Trooper Zachery Hartley with pellets to the leg. Deputy Mike King was hit by debris and suffered a minor injury. The two retreated and waited for backup. They were eventually treated and released at Roane General Hospital in Spencer.
The standoff with Hoskins continued until close to midnight according to Patterson.
“After communications, officers were able to gain entry and located the individual Mr. Hoskins underneath the residence,” Patterson explained. “He was taken into custody shortly after midnight.”
Hoskins is facing two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of malicious wounding, one count of domestic assault, and one count of domestic battery. He was taken to the Charleston Area Medical Center after the standoff ended. He is being treated for hypothermia.
Hartley has been a trooper for three years, King a deputy for 12 years.
