Trial for Big Chimney man accused of murder to be held in August

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County man will go on trial in August on charges related to the death of his wife.

The trial of Randall Chapman was set Wednesday to begin Aug. 27.

Chapman, 47, of Big Chimney, allegedly murdered his wife, Shirlene Young, in September. He told authorities at the time he had gone to sleep and awoke to find his wife’s body in the living room, adding she had died from suicide.

Investigators said Young had been shot in the back, and the state Medical Examiner concluded the wound was not consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot and the cause of death was homicide.
