Trial date moved in St. Albans murder case

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County circuit judge agreed Tuesday to order another psychiatric evaluation for a Dunbar woman charged with killing a woman and then sexually abusing her body.

Courtney Wallace

Courtney Shawn Wallace, 21, was in court for her original trial date Tuesday afternoon when Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey agreed with a defense motion to postpone the trial to 2020 and also agreed for a second evaluation of Wallace. Her attorneys are challenging the results of the first mental evaluation.

St. Albans police allege Wallace stabbed and killed Cherri Simpson at a home on Furlong Avenue in St. Albans on Jan. 17. Simpson’s body was found with multiple stab wounds and Wallace was found covered in blood, police said.

Simpson’s daughter told police she saw Wallace performing sexual acts on her mother’s unresponsive body.

Wallace remains housed in the South Central Regional Jail without bail.
