Summer months usually means more violent crime for CPD

CHARLESTON, W.Va. —  Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper says it’s not an urban myth, there is more crime in the summer months.

The warm weather and longer days contribute to the increase, he said.

“It is our busy season. The summer is busy for law enforcement. That’s a national trend and it’s always been that way,” Cooper said.

Unfortunately, the crime increase also results in an increase in the types of crimes, according to Cooper.

“The warmer weather and longer days just coincides with more violent crime,” he said.

Charleston police will also maintain high visibility during various summer events hosted by the city.

“We’ll be there to provide security and traffic control and make sure everybody can enjoy themselves and have a good time without any trouble,” Cooper said.
