Suddenlink Showcase kicks off HS Baseball season at Power Park

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Suddenlink High School Baseball Showcase kicked off the season at Appalachian Power Park Thursday night.

Herbert Hoover High School defeated Nicholas County 11-2 in the first game, before inclement weather forced the cancellation of the second scheduled contest between Sissonville and Wayne County.

“It’s great facility to play in,” said Nicholas County Coach Gene Morris of Power Park. “Everything is first-class and we enjoyed coming down here and playing on this field. Hopefully we’ll be invited back.”

Lexi Burke came to watch her boyfriend play for Herbert Hoover.

“I go a lot. My boyfriend plays on the team, Chase Stover number five. I love baseball and I love the weather that comes along with it. I love the season,” Burke said.

Herbert Hoover Coach Brian Young said the experience was fun for his team.

“It’s good to come down and play at a big park. We came in and swung the bats well today,” Young said.

Terry Justice, whose son was pitching, enjoyed the experience as much as the team.

“It’s great to come to Power Park and play. It gives the boys a lot of experience to play in front of a big crowd on a big stage,” he said.

The showcase continues Friday with Hurricane vs. Spring Valley at 4 p.m. and George Washington vs. Logan County at 7 p.m.
