State Senate candidate Jeffries says he would stand up for workers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State Senate candidate Dennis Jeffries promised to stand up for the working class if elected in the 8th district this year.

Jeffries, a Democrat from Putnam County, is hoping to win the seat currently occupied by Chris Walters.

“I would be a conservative labor Democrat,” Jeffries said. “I believe in the working people. I believe in the middle class.

Jeffries thought his background in business made him a good candidate to serve in the Senate and fix some of the state’s economic troubles.

“As a business man, I want to be able to get out there and help people to create jobs and be able to put people to work. I’ve been in business for 20 years,” he said.

A bill to make West Virginia a Right to Work state passed the state Senate last week, which Jeffries was not in favor of.

“I just believe Right to Work is not for this state,” Jeffries said. “I believe that the data shows, and I know the data is both ways, but I believe the data shows it’s not profitable for the state of West Virginia. We even had the governor of Ohio state to us that Right to Work is (wrong for the state).”

The Democratic primary in West Virginia is May 10.
