State officials: No evidence of MCHM spill

BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. — Despite earlier reports of a possible MCHM spill in Madison, state officials confirmed there is no evidence of such spill.

St. Albans Mayor Scott James said there was a report Tuesday morning about a possible spill that could affect people downstream in Kanawha County.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources later said it was a false alarm.

MCHM is a chemical used to clean coal; the January 2014 Elk River chemical spill involved MCHM getting into the water system, affecting more than 300,000 people.
