State government job fair set for Thursday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Anyone interested in a career in state government will have a great opportunity Thursday to learn more about what’s available.  The state Department of Administration along with Workforce West Virginia will stage a state government career fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Culture Center Thursday.  It’s the fourth annual event.

“We really want to educate job seekers with information on full time state government employment opportunities,” said Administration Spokesperson Diane Holley-Brown. “It’s really amazing the types of jobs that are available in state government.”

Brown said there are some areas of critical need now in healthcare, engineering, law enforcement, and information technology. However, representatives from 15 different state agencies will be there to speak to potential workers about the positions and what they entail.

“In many cases you might look at the personnel website and read a description,” she said. “But here, you’ll be able to sit down and talk to folks in state government.”

Holley-Brown suggests those interested bring along a resume, identification, and any other pertinent information they’d like to deliver to a prospective employer.  Last year more than 400 showed up for the event.

There are numerous openings despite financial strains on the state budget which may come as a shock to many.

“There is a hiring freeze imposed right now, but it’s for general revenue only.  A lot of these positions are special revenue and are not affected by the freeze,” Holley-Brown explained. “We also have a lot of the Baby Boomers that are retiring and we need to replace those positions.”
