St. Albans accident remains under investigation

ST. ALBANS, W.Va. — Police continue their investigation into a pedestrian struck by a car Tuesday evening near the Eldorado Club at the intersection of Grant Avenue and Chestnut Street.  Garrell Hubert Bently, 66, of Tornado was crossing the street as he left the club and was run over.

“There was a witness there that saw the collision,” said Captain Jim Agree of the St. Albans Police Department. “From the statement given he indicated the gentleman walked in front of the car, but it’s still under investigation.”

An accident reconstruction expert is looking into the facts of the accident which happened about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.  The driver is identified as Desper Lemon, 80, of St. Albans.  Lemon is a member of the St. Albans City Council.

“He’s not been charged with anything and he’s cooperating with the investigation,” Agee said. “By all accounts he’s pretty torn up about it.  He’s well known in the community and lives up that way. He was pretty shook up about it.”

Bently’s condition is unknown, but Agee said doctors were concerned and called his injuries “very significant.”
