South Hills neighbors party at BridgeFest

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Charleston neighborhood held a street fair Tuesday to raise money for beautification work in the area.

South Hills residents gathered at the intersection of Bridge and Walnut roads for BridgeFest. Local vendors sold food, while free music and children’s activities were also offered during the sunny, cool evening.

BridgeFest committee member Rick Rubin said the event has gone on for at least seven years, and the money raised will go toward planting vegetation and other landscaping projects along Bridge Road.

“People from South Hills area and elsewhere come,” he said. “It’s grown every year, and people love it.”

T-shirts were also sold Tuesday evening. The shirt’s designer, J.P. Owens, resides in Putnam County. He said he got involved after a co-worker noticed his designs and asked to use them.

“It’s a great event, I think, to pull people from the city together,” he said. “When you’ve got weather like this and an event like this where people are having a good time, I think it’s just great comradery among everybody.”

South Hills resident Leigh Shepherd said he’s gone every year, and it is amazing seeing how many people come out.

“I mean we obvious draw in from other areas, but it’s primarily a South Hills thing,” he noted. “It’s a great way for people to get together, but it’s also a great way to advertise, especially for the restaurants.”

Rubin said he expects the event will bring in between $10,000 and $15,000.
