South Charleston updates zoning laws to allow medical cannabis

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Recent changes to the zoning code will allow medical cannabis dispensaries to more easily fit within commercial development in South Charleston.

The city council last week approved updating zoning laws to allow such businesses. While the state has not given out any licenses yet, Mayor Frank Mullens said it’s important for the city to get ahead of business development.

“I don’t pretend to be an expert on it. We’re trying to get up to speed, but what we want to do like with any other business that it’s in a proper zone for that kind of activity,” he said.

Mullens added he has not received any pushback from the public about allowing dispensaries within city limits.

“I think this topic has been around long enough to where people are understanding that it’s going to be legal to do that kind of business in a community,” he said.

“I’m somebody who didn’t know a lot about it, but as I’ve talked to people that have been helped by medical marijuana, I tend to agree with that being permitted.”
