South Charleston one of three Sanders campaign stops Thursday

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will be in South Charleston Thursday, shortly before Donald Trump arrives for a rally in Charleston Thursday night.

The Sanders campaign announced Tuesday that Sanders will hold a campaign event at the SC Community Center Thursday afternoon.

“He’s coming,” Mayor Frank Mullens confirmed. “We’ll try to make their trip here as pleasant as possible. I’m sure there’s people in this area who’d like to see him. We’ll do what we can to make it as successful as we can.”

Mullens said the city only found out about the planned event late Tuesday evening.

“Less than 48 hours is a pretty quick notice, and we got some other things going on in the city. But we’ll try to make it work,” he said.

The mayor predicted a crazy day Thursday for both South Charleston and Charleston with the pair of rallies.

“It’s going to be a little bit chaotic, particularly on Jefferson Road. We all know how chaotic Jefferson Road can be anyway,” he said. “I’m sure the congestion will be quite chaotic that day with Sen. Sanders being in our town. I understand Donald Trump is going to be in Charleston so I’m sure they’ll have their hands full too. We’ll all do the best we can.”

Sanders is also planning to campaign in McDowell County Thursday morning, and in Morgantown Thursday night.
