South Charleston council signs property lease for river access point

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The City of South Charleston wants to provide an access point for boaters on the Kanawha River.

The city council signed a lease last week with the state Division of Highways for the property located near the intersection of Jefferson Road and MacCorkle Avenue underneath the Interstate 64 ramp.

“One of the things we’re missing here in South Charleston is river access, so this will give us an opportunity to have a nice boat ramp for people to have,” said Mayor Frank Mullens.

The state Division of Natural Resources plans to construct the boat ramp. Mullens said the city will also contribute to the project.

“We’re limited to what we can do with our lease agreement with the state as far as building permanent structures, but we can do things like picnic shelters and maybe a couple playgrounds — just some things for people to enjoy access to the river,” he said.

Mullens called the deal a “win-win” for South Charleston.
