South Charleston celebrating 15th annual Summerfest

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — South Charleston’s 15th annual Summerfest is underway, with special perks this year for flooded residents.

SC CVB Executive Director Bob Anderson said kids would be bused in from the flood zone of Saturday and offered free food.

“Mayor (Frank) Mullens came up with that and we’re really tickled with it,” Anderson said. “We’re going to have free snow cones, cotton candy. We have all the entertainment and fireworks and we’re real thrilled about it.”

Several residents attending the festival ‘Behind the Mound’ Thursday night said they loved Summerfest as a way to see old friends.

“Come out here see people you haven’t seen since this time last year,” said Andrew Metten. “Got good food out here, some good tunes to listen to, get a little break from work. It’s a good deal and a good thing.”

Robin Broyles had several things she loved about Summerfest.

“Getting to see people we haven’t seen in a long time, watching the dancing, the music of course and the funnel cakes.”

Much planning goes into Summerfest, Anderson said, almost a year in advance.

“We start next week planning for next year. And we have big bands, everything’s free. We have dance contests for adults and children. Everyone’s excited.”

Summerfest runs through Saturday night and concludes with a fireworks show. The Around the Mound Car Show is also Saturday afternoon.
