Soccer tournaments to generate $10 million for Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Three sports tournaments to be held at the Shawnee Park Multi-Sports Complex will generate $10 million in economic impact for the city of Charleston, the convention and visitors bureau announced Monday.

Gov. Jim Justice and the Kanawha County Commission announced Friday that US Youth Soccer selected the Dunbar facility and the Barboursville Soccer Complex to host the 2019 US Youth Soccer Eastern Regional Championships and 2019 and 2020 US Youth Soccer Eastern President’s Cup.

“Together, these three events translate into 12,000 hotel/motel room nights and an overall $10 million economic impact for Charleston,” the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau said in a release.

The Shawnee Park Multi-Sports Complex is scheduled to open in July, and will include six collegiate-size soccer turf fields, baseball/softball fields, tennis courts and renovated basketball courts.

The bureau also said the NJCAA Volleyball Division 2 National Championship will be hosted in Charleston through 2020, generating an economic impact of $400,000.
