Slack Street Recycling Center to be demolished May 5

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Demolition will begin May 5 on the Slack Street Recycling Center in Charleston.

Board members of the Kanawha County Solid Waste Authority learned of the date at Tuesday’s meeting. Kanawha County Commissioner Dave Hardy was also there to offer support to the demolition process.

Rodney Loftis and Son was chosen as the contractor back in March. Workers were already on site Tuesday preparing the building.

Rodney bid a low cost of $54,000, something members of SWA were extremely thankful for.

“Rodney did this at this price because he wanted to and because he wanted to give back to the community,” said board member Kay Summers.

Summers said she wants May 5 to be a “day of celebration” for the authority.

James Young, the authority executive director, said they are looking forward to when the site is back up and running.

Currently, Young said there is a market for what it is left at Slack Street.

“There’s a material exchange website where anybody can put it up there to try and sell it to other waste authorities, so there’s local ways of selling it or we can put it out nationally for people to look at as well,” said Young.

Young said one of their main tasks is to give back as much as they can before opening the new building.

Young said they want to use what they can and resell what they cannot use. He said the board will then make a decision on the new and used equipment they will need.

No new information was released about future plans for the new facility.
