Shawnee Park complex groundbreaking set for November

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Groundbreaking on the Shawnee Park multi-sports complex is scheduled for November.

The Kanawha County Commission announced at its Thursday meeting if everything goes as scheduled, bids will be accepted in September or October.

The $15.2 million project would be paid for by a $10 million bond and grants.

Kanawha County Commissioner Ben Salango said a 501c3 nonprofit has been set up to accept donations as well.

The commission has been looking to redevelop the Institute facility into a complex capable of hosting local and regional youth sports tournaments. An environmental report released July 6 stated while chemicals were found in the groundwater and soil, there are little chances for exposure.

S&S Engineering is expected to review that study before construction begins.

The commission is continuing environmental testing at the location. S&S Engineering held dye tests Thursday to test storm water drains which empty into the Kanawha River. A commission statement stated the dye was non-toxic and did not post any health risks.

Mary Jo Cleland, a project manager with ZMM Architects and Engineering, said they are making sure the area is safe for children to use.

“We’re taking every safety precaution,” she said.

Cleland also said alternatives to the proposal may be made if additional funding is obtained.
