CHARLESTON — Detectives with the Charleston Police Department are still looking for a suspect allegedly involved in a shooting last week at a West Side bar.
Jacques Slade, of North Carolina, was arrested Saturday and will face a first degree murder charge in the alleged killing of Jamaine Sutton of Dunbar, at Boondocks Bar and Grill on May 14.
Donnell Strong, 26, also known as “Pops Alot” or “Pops,” is still on the run wanted by detectives in connection to the shooting.
‘We don’t know if his bullets struck anybody,” said Chief of Detectives Lt. Steve Cooper. “We do know he was firing in the bar; at this point that’s a felony; wanton endangerment.”
Cooper says Boondocks, whose liquor license is currently suspended, has been a hotbed for crime for a while.
“It’s been a real trouble spot,” he said. “The night of the shooting; of the homicide; there were numerous individuals inside the bar that we have dealt with in the past on felonies.”
Cooper was hopeful the venue’s license would be suspended for good. He said the gun involved was likely stolen.
“In a lot of cases, guns that are used in crimes are stolen, or they’re purchased from a pawn shop. Generally they’re not purchased at a Cabela’s or something like that.”
Once Strong was taken into custody, the Boondocks case would be wrapped up, Cooper said.
Two witnesses inside the bar that night identified Slade as the person who shot and killed Sutton, police said. Detectives also say video surveillance inside the bar confirmed both of the witness statements.
Sutton died at the scene.Three others were also shot and suffered non-life threatening injuries.
