Rod Run and Doo Wop draws hundreds of out-of-state car owners to Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Nearly 1,000 classic automobiles lined the Kanawha Boulevard in Charleston Friday, the second day of the city’s annual Rod Run and Doo Wop car show.

Many out-of-state car owners visit Charleston every year to show off their car and this year was no different.

“This is one of our favorites right here — the Doo Wop — we don’t want to miss it!” said Jack Meadows, of Pulaski, Va. who takes his red 1957 Chevrolet pick up truck to car shows nationwide.

“We’re all over the country, but I’ll tell you, right here is our home,” he said.

Him and his wife Kathy Meadows attended the show for a sixth year. The couple said they enjoy visiting Charleston because of the friendly atmosphere.

“We love the car club, the vendors, the hotel. Awesome. They treat us like family,” said Kathy Meadows. “Just getting to see the whole variety of cars and the people that own them and what they’ve been through to build them. It’s just awesome.”

The couple’s friend Tom Covey, of Radford, Va., was also at the show. His 1969 red Corvette Stingray sat just a few cars away on the Boulevard.

“I love the drive over here,” Covey said. “I’ve had it (the car) for 8 years. Bought it our of North Carolina in 2008 and I drive the car. It doesn’t sit at home in the garage.”

Meadows said he also takes rides in his Chevy.

“You hear so many times ‘is it for sale?’ and I say ‘no’,” he laughed.

James Trump, also of Radford, Va., said he likes his vehicle because it’s a smooth and quick running car. He owns a 2000 C5 Corvette. This was his second year attending the event.

“(It’s) a beautiful country. The river is beautiful and it’s a nice place to stay,” he said.

The event runs through Sunday.
