Resurfaced South Charleston park to host baseball tourney

South Charleston Mayor Frank Mullens praised the resurfacing of the athletic fields at Little Creek Park at last weeks city council meeting, announcing that a baseball tournament will be held there the weekends of July 24-26 and August 7-9.

The town recently put AstroTurf on two baseball fields, a softball field and a soccer field at the park. Mullens said the investment has paid off for the area hotels as 500 rooms at 3 hotels have already been booked.

“That’s $58,000 worth of revenue for those hotels,” Mullens said. “That’s a good example of investment into your athletic complexes that pay off for your community.”

He said the project started last summer, and by the time it is finished there will be a whole athletic complex featuring turf fields.

“We started at the end of last summer. We did the baseball and the soccer field, and then in the fall we did another baseball field. We’re currently in the process of doing another soccer/football field and then it’ll be finished.”

Mullens was unsure exactly how many teams would be competing in the tournament, but said it would be a little league type event.
