‘Rare circumstances’ lead to 3 power outages in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Monday marked the third time in five days Appalachian Power Company had to deal with a power outage in and around downtown Charleston.

Appalachian Power spokesman Phil Moye said all three of the outages can be classified as something that rarely occurs.

“It’s not something we expect to see more of as the summer goes on,” he said. “These are all very unusual circumstances.”

It all began Thursday evening when an underground line malfunctioned near the corner of Virginia and Hale streets. A fire forced power off in much of the downtown. There was an outage Saturday in connection with a line problem that covered some of the East End and then a large tree fell Monday morning on the West Side bringing four power poles down with it.

“Fortunately in each case we able to get resources on them very quickly,” Moye said. “We are hopeful there are better days to come.”
