Putnam County Schools cancels spring break due to walkout

WINFIELD, W.Va. — Putnam County Schools announced Thursday its spring break has become instructional days and the last day of classes will be June 4.

The decision comes following the nine-day statewide teacher strike, in which schools across West Virginia were closed as teachers and other school employees demanded better pay and health care benefits.

Spring break, which was scheduled between April 2 and April 6, will now be used for class purposes. According to the school system, students can receive excused absences if they are going on vacations or school trips during this week.

The last day of school has moved from May 29 to June 4. March 16, which was originally scheduled as a day off will now be used for instructional purposes.
