Public works board rejects Appalachian Power tax reduction

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Board of Public Works approved Thursday this year’s recommended assessed values owned by utilities, in turn rejecting a request by Appalachian Power Co. for a reduction in its property tax assessment.

The utility cited mild weather during 2017 as the reason for the reduction, adding weather hurt the business.

Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper critized the proposal in December, saying it was “unfair, and an insult, to every taxpayer in the state.”

“This is corporate welfare at its worst, for a company that is doing very, very well,” he added.
