Public safety levy passes in Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Funding will go toward public safety agencies in Kanawha County following the passage of the public safety levy.

The levy needed a 60 percent approval rating. It passed by 85 percent on Tuesday night.

“It provides money for every city, every community, fire departments, police departments, ambulance service — it is very critical,” said Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper. “To some extent, it is a referendum on the direction of the county.”

Carper said the levy also provides funding to the Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation (KRT) Authority.

The funds will go toward salaries, new equipment and other services.

“It pays for the things we need,” Carper said.

The levy has been around for 30 years. This renewed levy will take affect next year.
