Prosecutors drop murder charge against man in Fourth of July shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A murder charge against a Charleston man accused of shooting a woman to death on the West Side in July has been dropped.

Prosecutors dismissed the charge Monday after Clarence Murray, 39, was released from jail. U.S. Marshals arrested Murray shortly after on meth charges.

Sheena Graves, 19, of South Charleston, died in the July 4 shooting outside the Littlepage Terrace apartment complex. Murray was charged with her murder the next day.

On Tuesday, prosecutors told the Gazette-Mail they dropped the murder charge because there was some confusion about who fired the shot that hit Graves. They said multiple shots were fired.

Charleston police said they believe Graves was in the middle of an altercation between Murray and another person when she was shot.

Murray is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate judge Thursday for the meth charge. He is being held without bail in the South Central Regional Jail.
