Police pursuit ends in Charleston with crash

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A driver crashed his vehicle during a pursuit in Charleston Thursday evening, authorities said.

The pursuit started near Chelyan. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office and West Virginia State Police set up spike strips near the Kanawha Boulevard exit, which the driver drove through.

The driver lost control of the vehicle northbound on Interstate 77 after striking another vehicle. Both ended up on the railroad tracks.

Two of the three northbound lanes heading into Charleston had to be closed causing a traffic backup. The lanes were reopened by 5:45 p.m.

The suspect and a child in the second vehicle were injured. The child was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
