Police probe violent altercation

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Police detectives are trying to determine who started an altercation on Charleston’s West Side Friday afternoon.

CPD officers work crime scene.

There were two people involved, according to Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper.

“One of the individuals was stabbed the other struck in the side of the head with what appears to be a chunk of asphalt,” Cooper said.

The person who suffered the stab wounds was taken to CAMC General. The other person suffered injuries to the head and jaw.

“We’re still sorting through the incident to see who the aggressor was, whether or not it was self-defense,” Cooper said. “It’s very early in the investigation. We’re sorting through evidence and interviewing witnesses.”

The altercation happened at about 1 p.m. Friday in the Rite Aid parking lot near the intersection of West Washington Street and Rebecca Street.
