Police conduct DUI and child safety seat checkpoint

CHARLESTON, W.Va.–A DUI and child safety seat checkpoint was conducted by Charleston Police Wednesday night near the 2600 block of Kanawha Boulevard.

The checkpoint began at 5 p.m. Wednesday and was scheduled until midnight. Highway Safety Coordinator Corporal Brian Jones says the time was strategic to catch happy hour drinkers.

“Knowing the trend over the years with people that are social drinkers, they get a drink or two after work and then go home,” Jones explained. “Recently we’ve seen an increase of that, so we come out here at around five o’clock until maybe ten or eleven to catch social drinkers.”

He also said that police were also looking to arrest drivers that would come through under the influence of drugs. Child safety seats were being emphasized at the checkpoint as well.

“People that have children in a booster seat or a child safety seat, we ask permission to check their seat,” Jones said.

He said they would check every car that came through and ask the driver if they had been drinking. The checkpoint is one of the normal spots that police set up in Charleston in effort to crack down on driving while impaired.
