Police: 1 arrest solves 2 shooting crimes in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Charleston Police Chief Steve Cooper says one arrest has solved two crimes in city.

Brandon Woodrum, 22, was taken into custody following a Sunday night shooting. Police have also connected him with another crime.

“During this arrest, it was discovered that he is the man who allegedly fired a shot over the Kroger employee’s head after the shoplifting last week,” Cooper said on Monday’s “580 Live” with Charleston Mayor Danny Jones.

Woodrum and his girlfriend, Hyanna Hogan, 19, are accused of taking items from the West Side Kroger. When an employee approached the couple in the parking lot, Woodrum allegedly pulled out a gun, fired a shot in the air and took off.

Police now say Woodrum is accused of shooting Hogan in the leg following an argument. It happened at around 9:40 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Breece Street.

“He called the police and tried to report it as a random shooting. Once she got to the hospital, she told us the real story,” Cooper said.

Woodrum is charged with malicious wounding for the Breece Street shooting. He’s also charged with wanton endangerment for the shoplifting incident and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Cooper said this man needs to be locked up.

“Shooting a girl in the leg, shooting up over the head of a Kroger employee who’s trying to arrest you for shoplifting and he’s previously convicted — clearly this guy is a menace to the city,” Cooper said.

So far, no charges have been filed against Hogan.
