Plea hearing for Putnam County murder case set for Tuesday

WINFIELD, W.Va. — A plea hearing for a man accused of murdering a Putnam County woman is scheduled for Tuesday.

Philip Casto of Scott Depot is set to plead guilty to murdering Jennifer Evans of Hurricane in September 2015.

Evans’ husband, Michael Evans, told police he found his wife shot in the head in the kitchen of their home. He also said she had recently stopped talking to Casto, but minutes before her death, she sent a text message to her husband saying Casto was at their home.

According to a statement made by Casto’s wife in a criminal complaint, the two had recently ended an affair. She also said an apparent suicide note by Casto was left at their home on that day.

Casto fled to Massachusetts, where Massachusetts State Police arrested him a day after the alleged murder.

Family members of Evans will be able to give statements at the plea hearing.

A judge will decide if Casto will get mercy or not. Casto will not be able to withdraw his plea if he does not like the sentence.
