Pipe bomb detonated in Nitro

NITRO, W.Va. — The Nitro Police Department and Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded Thursday to a bomb found in a Dupont Avenue home.

According to Nitro Deputy Chief David Richardson, two men called the authorities around 4 p.m. after finding the device.

“They were there to clean the house from some renters that had been evicted a couple of weeks ago,” Richardson said. “They advised that they had found a pope bomb. They actually handled it a minute before putting it back down.”

Richardson said more than 30 homes were evacuated before a robot was dispatched into the home. He added the bomb squad found something in the bomb that made them believe it was a live explosive device.

“The robot was able to cut into the device a couple of times where they found some foreign substance, some powder and some other things,” he said.

The bomb was deactivated.

Richardson said both departments are conducting an investigation.
