Woman’s body pulled from Elk River in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A woman died after the car she was operating plunged into the Elk River in Charleston Wednesday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses saw the woman’s Chevy Impala leave the Westmoreland Drive area, go across a set of railroad tracks, and plunge into the river at around noon.

Diving teams searched the river for the vehicle in a rescue effort, suspecting that someone was inside the car at the time of the plunge.

The middle-aged woman’s body was recovered approximately four hours later. She was transported to CAMC and pronounced dead.

No foul play was suspected, according to Charleston Police.

Due to the ongoing investigation, no further information, including the victim’s name, was released Wednesday night.
