Officer Doss pleads not guilty to misdemeanor charges

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A suspended Charleston police officer pleaded not guilty Tuesday to criminal charges connected to a deadly crash.

Stephen Doss, 27, was indicted earlier this month on the misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide, speeding and an emergency vehicle violation. The cruiser Doss was driving Jan. 4 slammed into a car being driven by Dora Clarke, 80. She died five days after the collision.

The indictment alleges Doss was driving with reckless disregard. Investigators have previously said Doss was responding to a call but was not using his siren or emergency lights. He was allegedly driving 74 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Kanawha County Circuit Judge Duke Bloom scheduled Doss’ trial for Sept. 25. A pretrial hearing is se for Sept. 19.

Doss remains on paid administrative leave.

The crash occurred on Charleston’s West Side near the intersection of West Washington Street and Maryland Ave.
