Oakley: Emergency crews are ready in case of flooding

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — While he is not expecting the worst, Mike Oakley of Kanawha County Emergency Management said his agency is prepared for flooding.

“We’ve already had planning meetings with our constituents and our emergency management folks and a lot of our agencies we work with on a continual basis,”

Most of West Virginia — including Kanawha County — is under a flash flood watch as Tropical Storm Cindy passes through the region. Rain began falling Thursday night and is expected to continue through early Saturday morning.

Oakley said it is crucial to stay informed as the rain continues.

“You’re going to want to watch your local news media,” he said. “Keep abreast of what that weather is doing.”

Oakley also said if you live in a flood-prone area, it is important to keep an eye on water levels to prevent being trapped if water becomes too high.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch Thursday for most of the state, which goes from 2 a.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday.
