Oak Hill man dies after shots exchanged in Fayette County

HILLTOP, W.Va. — An Oak Hill man was shot and killed early Tuesday morning, according to Fayette County authorities.

David Donnell McDowell, 35, suffered multiple gunshot wounds at a residence in the Hilltop area after traveling to that residence and brandishing a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, Fayette County Sheriff Mike Fridley and county Prosecutor Larry Harrah said in a joint news release.

McDowell and the alleged shooter, whose name hasn’t been released, apparently exchanged gunshots, authorities said.

“No arrests have been made at this time in connection with this shooting incident, but I anticipate that this case will be presented to the Fayette County Grand Jury for review and consideration after the investigation is concluded,” Harrah said.

Police did make an arrest after a drive-by shooting that took place near the residence along state Route 16 after McDowell was shot.

“Detectives have been able to identify Jimmy Johnson, age 28, of Beckley, as the individual involved in this drive-by shooting,” Sheriff Fridley said. “Johnson has been arrested and charged with the felony offense of Wanton Endangerment.”

Fayette County authorities were notified of the shootings at around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
