NWS: Heavy rain could produce flash flooding statewide

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Mountain State is expecting heavy rainfall late Wednesday that could result in flash flooding as thunderstorms push through the region, according to the National Weather Service.

“I’m sure that any downpour will be heavy,” said NWS Meteorologist Andy Roche. “If storms remain in the same area, it can produce a lot of rain over a same area and produce flash flooding.”

Roche said storms are heading from the northwest and could impact the entire state, not just one area.

“They’re pushed by a cold front, so these showers and thunderstorms are ahead of the cold front,” he said.

The NWS did not have any Flash Flood Watches or Warnings out in West Virginia as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, but Roche said they’re continuing to monitor the radar.

The rain won’t clear out until the end of the week, Roche said.

“Wednesday and Thursday: showers and thunderstorms. Thursday night: perhaps some clouds and then Friday should be clear,” he said.
