Norovirus spreading through Kanawha County

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Kanawha-Charleston Health Department is reporting an increase of norovirus in the area.

The department said in the statement they have seen an increase in calls requesting information about how to prevent the spread of the gastrointestinal illness.

Norovirus is high contagious, with most people being able to recover in one to three days.

Symptoms include sudden stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.

According to the department, the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is washing your hands with soap and water, especially before eating, preparing or handling food. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers should not be used as a substitute.

If one is sick, that person should stay home and drink plenty of fluids. If symptoms worsen, they should see a doctor.
