Nitro mother in custody after allegedly leaving 2 kids in hot car

NITRO, W.Va. — A Nitro mother was arrested for leaving her two kids in a hot car Sunday evening.

Police said they found a 5-year-old girl and 3-year-old boy dripping in sweat inside a locked car parked on Lock Street.

According to the criminal complaint, when the police officer opened the car door, he felt “extremely hot air coming from the vehicle.”

Carrie Higginbotham, 41, was found inside a nearby home. She was charged with child neglect creating risk of injury.

Police allegedly found an unloaded gun, items used for illegal drugs, and razor blades inside the car. The two children are now in their grandmother’s custody.

Higginbotham, who police said resides in Hurricane, was being held in South Central Regional Jail on $10,000 bond.
